As the Student Peer Advisor for the Sixth College Academic Advising office, I worked with advising staff to redesign and restructure the Sixth College Academic Advising "Back on Track" Canvas course to improve readability, consistency, user engagement, and aesthetic. UCSD students are required to complete the course if they are placed on academic notice.
In the original course, there was one large module called ‘Back on Track’ which included Academic Advisor/ Advisee Responsibilities, Years At a Glance, information on academic standing, AP and DQ, and 3 Assessments. Then, there was another section called ‘Strategies for Success’ which gave students tools for success, learning strategies, and resources, as well as 3 more assessments.
In my redesign of the course's structure, I added more module organization for distinction between sections. The course now consists of the following sections: Welcome, Stages of Academic Standing, Strategies for Success, and Resources for Success. I also named the assessments to help students better connect what they are learning to what they are being quizzed on.
The course was previously primarily composed of long sections of text, lists of bullet points, and outdated graphics. Now, there are videos of some of our advisors/peer advisor reading much of the content/information aloud which introduces the students to advising staff, makes them more approachable/human, and makes the content more engaging. I created thorough infographics and posters that better communicate the information necessary for the course, and that align with the Sixth College aesthetic and branding.
All graphics and videos were created using Canva Pro, in alignment with Sixth Academic Advising guidelines.
